The core principle of the sustainability agenda is that in meeting their own needs, present generations should avoid the over-utilisation of resources, often foregoing consumption today in the interest of future generations. At the other end of the spectrum, inter-generational equity issues are surfacing in mainstream policy areas, such as public health care provision, old age social security and pension provision, with real tensions emerging between the interests of present and future generations. As a result, there is a growing need for inter-generational dialogue, involving society as a whole. To help the generations work together, the Foundation has decided to apply to all its activities the questions set by the Global Meeting of Generations Programme:
In this way, we hope to make best use of the "capable young and the capable old" – and of all those in between.
